Dutch (Nederlands) is a West Germanic language spoken by over 22 million people natively and over 5 million people as a second language. Most native speakers live in the Netherlands and Belgium with smaller speech communities in parts of France, Germany and former Dutch colonies. It is closely related to neighboring West Germanic languages, especially Low German, West Middle German, and to a lesser extent West Frisian.
